Rhys Edwards

Rhys is an experienced organisational leader and has worked at the highest levels of the public service for over 16 years. He is passionate about great leadership in organisations and has driven reform agendas across many areas of government. He has a strong background in governance, central agency leadership, energy policy, industry development and major project facilitation.

Rhys was Secretary for the Tasmanian Department of Premier and Cabinet for six years from 2008 to 2014. In that role he was also Secretary to Cabinet and the Tasmanian Senior Official for the Council of Australian Governments (COAG). Through this period he was involved in reforming the State Service through a period of intense budget challenge following the GFC as well as participating in national reforms including health, disability and education.

As Principal of RDME Consulting, Rhys provides advice to Ministers, Heads of Government Departments, Universities as well as undertaking leadership work in the not-for-profit sector.

Rhys has an economics degree from the University of Tasmania and was awarded a Rhodes Scholarship in 1992. At Oxford he completed a MSc in Comparative Social Research. Rhys is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, a Salzburg Global Fellow, a member of the University of Tasmania Council, and Chair of the Joint Board of Studies for Engineering (UTAS). His former roles include economic adviser to the Premier of Tasmania, Deputy Secretary of the Department of Economic Development and Deputy Secretary of the Department of Premier and Cabinet.
