Ms Åsa Olsson

Program Director

Åsa Olsson is Director Research, Development & Innovation at L H Martin Institute of the University of Melbourne and works currently on projects with institutions in Colombia, Australia, Malaysia, Indonesia and with 10 African countries to ascertain, develop and implement strategies to enhance performance in research.

Born in Sweden, with a career spanning over 15 years Åsa has worked with some of the world’s most prominent academic scholars and has extensive experience with integration of higher education, science and innovation policy and leadership for both institutions and governments. Åsa’s previous roles include Program Manager, Innovation, Higher Education, Research for Development (IHERD) at the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, OECD, Paris; Policy Specialist, Research, Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency, SIDA, Stockholm; Program Analyst, Forum on Higher Education, Research and Knowledge, United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation, UNESCO, Paris. She has conceptualised and managed international research programs, with budgets of approximately A$10 million.

These include:

  • engagement and establishment of international research networks of leading scholars from Europe-North America, Latin America, the Caribbean, Arab States and Asia-Pacific, translating comparative research to institutional policy development enhancing research performance and promoting collaboration across disciplines between globally renown scholars and researchers in emerging and developing institutions;
  • development and implementation of contextualised research leadership programs in Asia, Africa, Latin America and Australia to shift focus on organisational policies and practices for enhancing research performance in high performing and emerging research environments.
