William Locke
William is Assistant Director of the Centre for Higher Education Research and Information (CHERI) at the Open University in the United Kingdom. He is directing the UK part of the international study of the Changing Academic Profession and has published several academic journal articles, reports and chapters, and edited a book on the academic profession in the UK. Other recent publications are on: the higher education research-policy nexus; English higher education policy; the role of intermediary bodies in HE; markets in UK HE; mergers and organisational cultures in higher education institutions; and the strategic management of the research-teaching nexus. He has spoken at international conferences in China, Japan, the United States and throughout Europe. William has undertaken research and written reports for a number of HE policy bodies, including on: student engagement; league tables and their impact on higher education institutions; graduates’ retrospective views of their courses; the social impact of higher education study; strategic foresight in higher education policy development; conceptions of excellence in teaching and student learning; and the career decision-making of part-time students.
