Sociology of Education as ‘powerful knowledge’: the radical case for recovering a disciplinary tradition
Speaker: Professor Michael Young, London Institute of Education
Professor Michael Young is a leading sociologist of education who has contributed to shaping the discipline over the last 40 years. In this seminar, he will discuss the present fragmented state of the sociology of education in the UK (and arguably Australia) and the problems this causes for the development of the discipline. He argues that we need to recover the “sociology of education’s disciplinary role as part of the wider Enlightenment project of sociology.” We must do so if we are to produce ‘powerful knowledge’ about education that will influence “policy makers, practitioners and other students of education”.
We invite you to attend this seminar and encourage your contributions to this important discussion.
