Women in Research Leadership 2010
The Women in Research Leadership course focuses on the career challenges and opportunities for women within the research sector. This course has been designed in collaboration with the UQ Downtown Business School and generates the opportunity for women researchers and managers, from the tertiary sector and from research institutions, to share their experiences.
The course draws on the recently developed international research on the factors that underpin success for women researchers, as well as the strategies necessary to 'thrive and excel' rather than merely 'survive'. It is designed to increase understanding of organisational cultures and to explore strategies for success and strategies to negotiate institutional barriers and obstructions.

This course will be delivered on the 7-11 June 2010at UQ Business School Downtown, Level 19 Central Plaza One, 345 Queen Street, Brisbane. This premier UQ Business School location is in the heart of the Brisbane CBD and is equipped with state-of-the-art teaching and learning facilities. Who Should Attend?
This course is designed for women from Australian and New Zealand Universities and research institutions who have a particular interest in developing their understanding of the research environment. The course will be of particular interest to those who wish to develop careers as research managers or research team leaders.

Course Leaders
Professor Sharon Bell
Sharon Bell is a Senior Academic at the L.H. Martin Institute at the University of Melbourne. She was most recently Deputy Vice Chancellor at the University of Canberra and Pro-Vice Chancellor (Equity and Community Partnerships) at Griffith University. Sharon's background is as a senior academic administrator, a documentary filmmaker and an anthropologist. She was Co-convenor of Universities Australia Executive Women (previously AVCC Senior Women's Colloquium) (2005-2008). Previous university positions include Dean of the Faculty of Creative Arts and Dean of the Faculty of Arts at the University of Wollongong. At Wollongong Sharon's contribution to the University's regional development initiatives was significant. Sharon was instrumental in establishing the University of Wollongong's cross faculty Digital Media Centre and the Film Illawarra project.
Anne-Marie Birkill
Anne-Marie is currently CEO of i.lab Incubator Pty Ltd, a $10 million Queensland Government initiative providing space, skills and business development support and mentoring to up to 30 early stage, technology based companies. Anne-Marie has an excellent understanding, and experience of the opportunities and challenges facing industry, government and universities and has demonstrated both ability to lead and work in teams in each sector. With extensive expertise and experience in technology commercialisation, Anne-Marie's skills include strategic planning, corporate governance, risk management, product development, capital raising, intellectual property management, sales, marketing and market research.
