Study on the Quality of Teaching in VET

The LH Martin Institute at the University of Melbourne is leading a project to research and make recommendations on the factors that affect the quality of vocational education and training (VET) teaching. This includes VET teacher qualifications and continuing professional development; the impact teaching has on the quality of the VET student experience and student outcomes; and how this can be evaluated. The project is funded by the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR), and is managed by the Australian College of Educators (ACE).

Papers from the project are available as follows:

This report presents the findings of the research with different stakeholders within VET: it focuses on stakeholders’ perceptions about the nature of VET teaching and the kinds of VET teacher qualifications and CPD that are needed.

You are invited to comment on The quality of teaching in VET: options paper. This paper presents a range of options, models and proposals on VET teacher preparation, qualifications and continuing professional development, and on ensuring and evaluating the quality of VET teaching and its impact on the VET student experience and outcomes.

Submissions on this Options paper will be used to prepare the project’s final report and recommendations, which will propose models for the preparation and continuing development of VET teachers, and for appropriate evaluation frameworks and quality indicators.

If you would like to comment on the Options paper, please email your submission to Professor Lees a Wheelahan via leesaw@unimelb.edu.au by close of business on Monday 4th October 2010.

If you are having difficulty downloading the material, please contact Dr Emma Curtin, (03) 8344 3153.

Other projects on VET teaching and the VET teaching workforce
This project is one of four concurrent projects exploring VET teaching. The second - How are VET teachers receiving their initial training? – is a National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER) project; the third - Practitioner expectations and experiences with the Certificate IV in Training and Assessment – is funded by NCVER and managed by Victoria University.
The third is by the Australian Government Productivity Commission, which is conducting research and making recommendations on the future of the VET workforce, see: Education and Training Workforce: Vocational Education and Training Commissioned study

Another significant project relevant to this research is the Skills Australia study of the skills required of the future workforce under its National Workforce Development Strategy.
